A website supplier may deliver a cropped image with “Creative Commons” in a spreadsheet but no creator, source or exact licence. The business cannot reconstruct the required credit from that label. Commission an asset-specific record and a ready-to-review credit line before the image is used.
Primary evidence and claim boundaries
The CC BY4.0 deed summarises appropriate credit, licence linking and marking changes, without implying endorsement. It also states that other rights may remain and the deed is not the legal code. Primary reference · Read 18 October 2026.
Filled acceptance example
Original synthetic teaching scenario, not a client case, provider integration test or business result. The example policy needs the actual owner’s approval; scroll the table on narrow screens.
| Input and state | Declared check | Expected output and decision |
|---|---|---|
| Synthetic asset “Square study”; creator Example Creator | Source https://example.test/square; asserted CC BY4.0 | Draft credit: Square study — Example Creator; source; CC BY4.0 |
| Supplier crops the synthetic asset to 4:3 | Change record: cropped; no other modifications | Append “cropped to 4:3”; retain prior change notices if supplied |
| Actual asset has only “found online” | No verified licence/creator evidence | Do not treat it as cleared for use |
| Credit says creator recommends our service | No endorsement authority | Remove unsupported endorsement claim from proposed credit |
Practical handover procedure
- Ask for the exact asset file/hash, original source, creator and versioned licence evidence. Keep purchased stock terms, client-owned media and CC material distinct.
- For the filled synthetic record, write a complete credit with creator/source/licence links and change note. Have the responsible reviewer check placement and any supplied notices.
- Before using real material, confirm that the person granting permission has the relevant rights and review other applicable restrictions with qualified advice when needed. Do not infer permission from a search result.
Interpret the outcome
The completed line is directly usable as a review artefact, while “Creative Commons” alone is not. The example does not claim the fictional source actually hosts a licensed work. Every real asset needs its own evidence, and a correct credit cannot cure a missing permission.
Acceptance decision
Require traceable asset identity, exact licence evidence and the approved credit/change record. Unverified rights remain a hold for that asset.
Limits and unverified work
Synthetic asset record, no third-party image copied or uploaded. Informational delivery workflow only, not a legal clearance opinion or warranty.
