Online retailers: connect sizing searches with useful guidance

A clothing retailer can make a sizing page useful by distinguishing body measurements from flat garment measurements and explaining the comparison. The worked example below turns a vague ‘between sizes’ question into a checkable method. It does not claim a universal fit, represent a real garment or prove a reduction in returns.

ORIGINAL WORKED EXAMPLE · NOT CLIENT DATA

Body versus garment — a worked sizing example

Invented non-stretch woven shirt; centimetres throughout. Illustrative body chest 96 cm. Garment half-chest is measured flat with the shirt fastened, from underarm to underarm, without stretching. No production tolerance has been measured.

Body versus garment — a worked sizing example
MeasurementIllustrative valueMeaning / limitation
Body chest circumference96 cmAround the body; not a flat garment width.
Size M garment half-chest52 cm flat → approximately 104 cm around2 × 52 = 104. Approximation for this example, not every garment construction.
M difference from body104 − 96 = 8 cmCircumference difference, not 8 cm of room on each side.
Size L garment half-chest54 cm flat → approximately 108 cm around108 − 96 = 12 cm difference; not automatically the better fit.
Other fit checksShoulder, length, sleeve and preferred fit still unknown.Compare a well-fitting shirt measured the same way; ask the retailer if uncertain.

The customer can now compare 52 cm with a shirt measured flat, or 104 cm with a body circumference, without mixing units. Neither the 8 cm nor 12 cm difference is a universal recommendation: fabric, cut and fit preference still matter.

Use it in a real project

  1. Measure the actual product by size and record method, units and sample version.
  2. Label body and garment columns explicitly; do not copy this fictional chart into product specifications.
  3. Link the product's fit notes and current returns information beside the size selector.

Review before publishing

  • Are units and measurement methods visible next to values?
  • Are circumference and flat width kept distinct?
  • Are fit uncertainty and consumer rights preserved?

Turn the evidence into a useful page

Use one product-specific sizing resource with a measurement method, checked chart and fit limits. A different cut needs its own measured evidence, not merely a renamed generic chart.

A minimal enquiry brief

Collect product code, size being considered and relevant garment measurements; let the shopper compare a favourite item. Avoid unnecessary body photos or sensitive measurements unrelated to fit.

An AI follow-up to test the answer

I am between sizes. What information should a clothing store provide beyond small, medium and large?

This is a simulated question, not an observed ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude answer or recommendation. A useful answer should point to the worked resource and disclose its limits, not invent a preferred supplier.

Questions worth resolving

Is 52 cm the customer's chest size?

No. Here it is the garment's flat half-chest. Doubling gives an approximate garment circumference, not a body measurement.

Does more room always mean a better size?

No. Shoulder, length, fabric and preferred silhouette remain relevant. The retailer needs actual garment evidence to advise.

Sources, evidence and limits

Primary sources checked 13 October 2026. Each source supports only the adjacent statement. The worked numbers, workflows and templates are original teaching examples, not facts verified by those organisations.

ACCC — Repair, replace, refund, cancel

ACCC distinguishes remedies for product problems from change-of-mind returns. A business that offers a change-of-mind policy must follow it.

General Australian consumer guidance, not a decision about a particular return. Warehouse grading or a store policy does not remove consumer guarantees.
