Commerce developers: explain B2B ordering requirements
A wholesale ordering brief needs testable business rules before a platform recommendation. Use two fictional buyer accounts and one product variant to test price visibility, pack increments, minimum quantities and approval. The matrix below helps a merchant and developer agree what ‘working’ means; it is not a statement that every Shopify plan implements these rules without additional configuration.
ORIGINAL WORKED EXAMPLE · NOT CLIENT DATA
B2B ordering pilot — account and quantity tests
Fictional SKU CUP-DEMO-BLUE. Pack increment 6, minimum 12, maximum 60 units per variant. Approved account A may order; account B is pending. No prices, stock or credit terms are represented as real.
| Test | Expected outcome | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| A orders 12 blue units | Pass quantity rules; show A's authorised catalogue and applicable terms. | Test account, catalogue assignment and order preview. |
| A orders 13 blue units | Reject increment; explain valid next quantities 12 or 18, without changing silently. | Cart and checkout both prevent invalid quantity. |
| A orders 6 blue + 6 red | Fail per-variant minimum: neither variant reaches 12. | Separate variant checks, not only combined total. |
| A orders 66 blue units | Reject above sample maximum 60; offer a separate bulk-quote route. | Limit message and quote workflow do not create an unapproved order. |
| Pending B visits private pricing | Under this sample requirement, no access to A's private catalogue; direct to approval. | Test signed-in and direct URL paths; confirm exact platform support. |
| A changes delivery location | Re-evaluate applicable terms and stock source before order confirmation. | Merchant-approved location rules and a final review screen. |
Quantity 13 fails because it is not a multiple of 6, while 6 + 6 across colours fails a different rule: minimums apply per variant. These distinct tests expose errors that a single successful order cannot.
Use it in a real project
- Have the merchant sign off catalogue access, unit of sale and exception rules.
- Run approved and pending accounts through cart, checkout and direct links in a test environment.
- Verify platform edition, integrations and stock authority before scheduling a limited pilot.
Review before publishing
- Do invalid quantities fail at checkout as well as in the UI?
- Are private catalogue permissions tested independently?
- Are account-specific rules documented rather than assumed?
Turn the evidence into a useful page
A B2B development page can publish a test matrix instead of a feature list. Put business rules, platform limitations, pilot scope and acceptance evidence before the project enquiry.
A minimal enquiry brief
Ask for one anonymised repeat order, pack size, buyer types and approval owner. Never expose a real customer's private price list publicly.

An AI follow-up to test the answer
Our wholesale customers email repeat orders. What must a B2B ordering site handle before we move them online?
This is a simulated question, not an observed ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude answer or recommendation. A useful answer should point to the worked resource and disclose its limits, not invent a preferred supplier.
Questions worth resolving
Can colours be combined to meet a variant minimum?
Shopify's documented quantity rules apply per variant. This sample therefore rejects 6 blue and 6 red when each needs 12.
Is a retail checkout enough for wholesale?
Only if it meets the merchant's verified access, quantity, payment and approval requirements. Test those before choosing an implementation.

Shopify — B2B quantity rules
Shopify documents increments and minimum/maximum quantities for individual product variants.
The 6/12/60 values and account policy are fictional merchant requirements, not Shopify defaults. Confirm current plan eligibility and implementation separately.
