Use software directly when your team can review and execute its findings. Evaluate managed implementation when you need accountable work beyond reporting. Neither route guarantees rankings or AI citations.
Discuss a scoped SEO implementation brief with MadRaven Lab. Bring redacted findings and authorised page boundaries, not a login or a promise to “fix everything”.
A dashboard and an execution agreement are different purchases
Semrush documents keyword research, rank tracking and technical audit capabilities [S1]. Those observations can help an internal team or an external provider. Tools may also offer automations or integrations; the relevant question is which actions your chosen product, plan and permissions actually support. It would be inaccurate to claim software can never implement changes.
Conversely, paying an agency does not prove implementation. Ask what will be delivered, who may approve a change and what evidence closes it. A report row should become a reviewed decision, not an automatic instruction to rewrite established pages. Google's guidance does not guarantee indexing or a first position [G2]. This comparison addresses ownership of execution, not which software brand is “best”.
Compare the same obligations
| Decision dimension | Software + internal execution | Managed implementation |
|---|---|---|
| Business fit | A team with editorial and developer capacity may run its own tools. | Useful when execution ownership or specialist capacity is missing. |
| Features | Compare research, audit, tracking and supported automation separately. | Specify actual work; a monthly PDF alone is reporting, not implementation. |
| Data / AI readiness | Record property, dates, location, device and evidence behind generated advice. | Require the same boundaries plus human fact and decision review. |
| Integration | Check CMS permissions and which automations actually write changes. | Approve specific systems/actions; do not grant blanket production access. |
| Implementation / onboarding | Allocate an owner, development time, review and acceptance. | Require named deliverables, approvers, version records and handover. |
| Total cost / price | Count seats, credits, add-ons and internal execution time. | Separate tool charges, implementation, content, retainer and exclusions. |
| Governance / security | Apply approval limits even when software can automate changes. | Keep frozen URLs and least privilege explicit in the contract. |
| Reliability / operations | Keep evidence of runs and failure handling, not only green dashboards. | Require rollback/incident responsibility and reproducible acceptance. |
| Ecosystem / support | Product documentation may be sufficient for an experienced team. | Check who provides support and what is outside the engagement. |
| Localization | A national desktop estimate is not Melbourne mobile demand. | Require natural EN/ZH review and consistent market/device comparisons. |
| Migration / exit | Retain useful exports and business-owned account access. | Agree report, source, account and work-log handover before signing. |
| Search / AI extractability | Use findings to support useful pages and verifiable facts. | Separate technical delivery from indexing, ranking, AI citation and sales. |
Worked example: four findings, one ready brief
Synthetic teaching ledger; not a live MadRaven audit or actual changes. Imagine a business receives four findings. Give every action an owner, explicit permission, evidence and an acceptance statement. This is a minimum completeness test—not permission to deploy.
| Finding / inputs | Output | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Old homepage title: owner, evidence and acceptance exist, but no permission | hold · authority | Keep the old homepage frozen; do not edit to clear a warning. |
| New independent guide: owner, permission, brief/sources and acceptance exist | ready-for-reviewed-brief | Continue substantive editorial and technical review, not automatic publication. |
| Reported form failure: evidence and permission, but no owner | hold · owner | Assign responsibility before buying more reporting. |
| Regional ranking claim: owner and permission, but no supporting evidence | hold · evidence | Get comparable location/device/period evidence; do not claim a result. |
Run the filled JSON through the downloadable module. The result is three holds and one complete brief. A software-capable internal team can close the same gaps as a service provider. Hiring help is rational where capacity or ownership is missing—not simply because the report has many warnings.

console.log(actionLedger(examples.ledger));
// hold, ready-for-reviewed-brief, hold, hold
Price and verifiable value
Do not compare a monthly tool subscription with an unbounded retainer. Use one currency, billing period and GST basis. Separately list software seats/usage, approved implementation deliverables, review, monitoring and support. Public tool pricing can change, and implementation depends on scope; this page does not establish a current same-scope price or promise savings. Request the relevant plan details and a written delivery quote.
The observable advantage of a well-scoped service is an accountable work product: a reviewed brief, approved change record, acceptance evidence and handover. It is not a presumed ranking advantage. If the internal team already delivers these, software plus internal execution may be the more appropriate route. If an external provider only forwards an automated PDF, the implementation gap remains.
Risks and an acceptance checklist
- Before buying: match the correct property, market, device and complete comparison period. Write the business decision and evidence required.
- Before granting access: define frozen URLs, read/write roles, approving owner and data redaction. Do not send credentials in an enquiry.
- During a pilot: use one authorised action; require a reproducible before/after record, editorial review and narrow technical checks. A failed test stays in the record.
- Before signing off: distinguish implementation acceptance from indexing, ranking, AI citation, valid enquiries and sales. A successful deployment proves none of the latter.
- At exit: retain business-owned account access, source/asset ownership, exports, work log and any agreed rollback material. Check what remains tied to a subscription.
Questions buyers ask
Should I cancel my SEO software if I hire a provider?
Not automatically. Decide who owns the account, what data is needed and whether the provider's reporting is comparable. Avoid paying twice for an unidentified deliverable, but do not lose useful history just to consolidate invoices.
Can automation clear all warnings?
Some actions can be automated, but that is not evidence that each warning is a real problem or that every page is authorised for change. Keep exclusions and approvals enforceable. The ledger deliberately holds an unapproved old homepage.
How does this apply to GEO?
Include verified brand facts and explicit applicability in content acceptance. Treat actual AI answer observations separately from search reports; neither an audit score nor publication demonstrates an AI recommendation or sale.
When is MadRaven Lab relevant?
Our public service scope includes website and search work [M1]. Discuss specific execution gaps and the evidence you can authorise us to inspect. Any implementation, measurement window, fee and support boundary must be agreed; no blanket access or outcome guarantee follows from an enquiry.
